Technique question- how is he doing this?

I'm relatively new to clawhammer.  It seems the more I dig, the more I love playing OT.  So I stumbled on to "red haired boy" on utube while fishing around for different tunes and styles.  I ran across this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi45c2Nik8Y

Now most people who post up utube videos should probably not waste the bandwidth (IMHO) but this on the other hand I find to be very good.  I can play the bum-ditty and the drop thumb, but I cant tell with my naked eye what he's doing to make this sound.  Its got good pop, good rhythm and stands alone.  It is also much more melodic then most of the songs I've learned so far (i.e. cripple creek, old joe clark etc.).  I can appreciate the nature of the melody in Red Haired Boy lends itself to a different technique than the bum-ditty or drop thumb (though I've heard others play it that way- its not as cool as this).

If you can tell me how this is done and perhaps point me to a video lesson or two that address the technique, I'd be much obliged.
