Fretless technique

Howdy folks.

I have a new fretless banjo, a locally made 'White Swallow', made here in South Australia, by Allan Funk, a beautiful instrument. I didn't realise that fretless technique was so vastly different to fretted playing, all of the tunes I already play, I have had to change fingerings, it just didn't sound right playing the same way as fretted playing. I am not using all of my left fingers, I am only using index and middle, pretty much. Also, using the tip of the nail on the fingerboard, which is brass, is also a little challenge. I must say though, I am really enjoying the new experience, it certainly is great for the ear.

My question is; the left fingers, index and middle, are these the dominant fingers in fretless playing, or should I be trying to play as I was on the fretted banjo with ring finger and pinky?

Any other general advice I would also welcome. I will post photos of the new banjo as soon as I find my camera.

Thankyou,

Tim
