swing in trad. appalachian music

when is it appropriate to have a bit of 'lilt' in your playing, and when is it better to play straight? it's perhaps a habit picked up from my jazz-playing days, but i tend to play with at least a little swing for most tunes except for the really fast ones. and thinking about the few fiddlers i have jammed with, some had  a bit of bounce to their playing which seemed to fit well, while with others who played straight it never quite locked in rhythmically. sorry if that is a bit vague, i am just wondering how you all navigate this.
