Reasons NOT to do this?

I play around in chords when I am playing contemporary folk tunes - I try to throw in the key melody notes but I also brush a lot of chords when my husband and I are singing. So, here's something I am noticing: In order to be fast enough to the chords, I often have to cheat, and make a shape that I can get to comfortably while leaving out the strings that are too hard. This means very different fingering than if I were playing the whole chord. Am I setting myself up with a bad habit?
