Sustain

I am not sure if this is the best forum to post this, but here goes. I play three finger, but I think that the music I do is "old time", think Wade Mainer. In any case, I recently converted a 1923 Lyon and Healy to a five string. It turns out that it has a lot of sustain, which I found I really like. However, I have heard a lot of people say that a lot of sustain is to be avoided. I have been doing some experimenting and, to my ear at least, it sounds pretty good when I am playing something at 95 BPM or less. When I get up over that, as in 120 or so, it doesn't sound nearly as good. I was just wondering what others feel about high sustain for the "slower" songs, which is a large part of the music that I enjoy and play.
