5th string question and Wade Ward book

I love the Wade Ward book I got for Christmas! I have been having a good time learning Goin' Down that Road Feeling Bad, Peachbottom Creek, and Johnson Boys.

I have a right hand question that came up for me when playing Johnson Boys.  In the first measure 1st beat--hammer on to first string, 2nd beat--open 5th string, 3th beat--open 5th string, 4th beat-- hammer onto first string. I'm not used to hitting the 5th string on the beat twice in a row like that. I find myself not lifting my hand between the 1st and 2nd beats, staying down until I can hit the fifth string on the way up. Its not smooth. Should I be bringing my hand up and then down again before sounding the 5th string on the 2nd beat?
