Left hand questions

So, I picked up the banjo about six months ago on a whim. Turns out, I love the thing. I've been playing guitar for a while, so I already have a sense of how it works.

Trouble is, I never listened much banjo music before. I've always liked the sound, but the most I really listen is on a few Tom Waits songs and some Irish music, so I don't have a lot of music to go back to yet to learn from listening.

This site has been a lot of help in my learning, so I figured I'd be best off joining and talking to the people around here.

I've tried looking things up, but I only find things near what I'm looking for.
My questions are, how necessary is it to place your thumb on the neck? I only read about that in passing, and I wondered if it was something I ought to be doing. I don't have any issues with the neck resting at the base of my thumb, but I wonder if it would make a difference doing it that way.

I also wondered about left hand techniques, and if it involves more than fretting, hammers, and slides.
