Same-string drop thumb?

Hi all,

I'm still just a beginner, learning from the books I won here (and of course from RSB - thanks, Tony!), although my wife sometimes says "hey, that almost sounds like a song!"  ; )

I picked up the tab book for Steve Martin's "The Crow" and ran across something I hadn't seen before.  In the "Clawhammer Medley" tabs, there are several places where you have to play a drop thumb on the same string.  In other works, I-T-I on the first string, same fret.  I think I've got a reasonable handle on playing drop-thumb on other strings, but I can't figure out how to do this; my thumb hits the string the same time as my first finger, muting it.  If I try to make it 2 separate "picks" it's just a mess.  I've been listening to the recording, and it sounds like that index picking stroke is sounding, but it's too fast for me to be sure.

Am I missing something here (always a possibility)?  Is that first stroke supposed to be "choked?"  Tony Trishka did the tabs, so I assume that's what he meant, but it's tripping me up a little.

Advice from the smarter and/or more experienced folks here is always appreciated.

Thanks,

Darel
