I have been stuffing a towel in my open end clawhammer banjo (relatively new to it) to tone down an otherwise loud and harsh sound. I have seen others doing this in videos. It is not very secure over time.
I even trimmed a large piece of styrofoam and jammed it under the rod but result was not good.
I was wondering what others may have discovered to use to muffle the sound of their banjos.
(I am not talking here about a mute for under the bridge - I have a number of different mutes that I use for that when practicing).
