f#DADD tuning in everyday use

I really like the sound of f#DADD tuning for D tunes. The lower tuned 5th string has a much more pleasing sound to my ears (and when I play two finger thumb lead, the droning first string sounds nice as a D, rather the E in aDADE).

So here's the first part of my two-part question: not being very theory-smart, I'm wondering if the f# 5th string 'gets along' with other instruments playing in D. If I was playing in a jam, where one might expect to hear the near-constant 5th string A, would the F# sound off?

Related to that, is there a G or A tuning that has a similar effect?  Something with a mellower, lower 5th string?
