Almost silent hammer

Hi all

I can pull-off with the best of them, or at least make a nice clear sound, but my hammer is almost non-existent.  In the small hours, when the house is deathly quiet, and I hold my breath, and smash that index finger down on the first string, I can just about hear it.  It sort of works a tad when I hammer on a string that my frailing hand has struck, to change note, but I can't make a sound otherwise.  Any advice?
