Clawhammer Right Hand Technique Question

I read an article recently that talked about the picking or right hand motion of clawhammer. If I understood the article, it  inferred that on the upstroke there is an outward swing or motion to the hand. I had not considered that my motion was straight or had an outward swing. Has anyone heard this suggestion before?
