Need general advice with figuring out songs without tab

There are a couple of songs that I can play on the fiddle (namely "In the Pines" and "Likes Likker better than me", but these are just examples), but which I can't find any banjo tab for online.  I am trying to work the songs out myself on the banjo, but I keep hitting snags.  Based on the fiddle part, I figured out the key of the song and the starting note.  I can also more or less work out the melody line on the banjo.  I would think that this is a pretty good start, but here is where I hit a snag.  I am having trouble translating that melody line into clawhammer sound.  I try to add double thumbs, drop thumbs, brush strums, bumpa ditty, bum ditty, what have you, and I just can't get it to sound right.    I also have trouble applying bumpa ditty or bum ditty to 3/4 time, which is what some of these songs are in.  (If it is 4/4 time, I get something like bumpa ditty bumpa ditty to fill up a measure.  But how does that work with 3/4 time?).

This is my first time trying to figure out a song without tab, and maybe I'm not at a level to be trying that yet, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Any general advice (doesn't need to be specific to these songs), suggestions, pointers, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
