How to spice up ye olde classics

Friends,

We all have our own ways of playing a tune. It might be incorporating a certain lick at a certain place or altering some melody notes here and there to create a more interesting soundscape when playing solo. 

I recently came across some videos of a guy named Lukas Pool who is a fine player, banjo builder and also the son of Scott Pool who makes awesome banjos.

I think Lukas treats a lot of tunes in a very interesting way with his arrangements. In the end of this post ill try to link a few videos to his playing to make my point understandable.

What i am after is a discussion on your best tips and tricks for making tunes sound different and more melodically different. It might be a different fingering on a chord, adding 7ths or nines, scales or harmonies, licks, that you find interesting.

Not sure if my topic makes sense (i blame it on being at work too long today)
