neck width and scoop?

Hi.

Just got my second hand Deering Goodtime Classic and working through some tutorials.  Very very Happy with progress so far but as I learn I wonder if the Deering was the right instrument.  I've watched Dan Levenson's tutorials and some of the Tunetorials and other similar material and I notice that the clawhammer banjos have the 'scoop' where they play on the neck and that perhaps the neck is a little wider than the Deering.  And the pot seems to be 12" for a deeper clawhammer sound.  I'm happy to carry on with the Deering (and will do) but don't want to get into bad habits or cause myself frustrations or a longer learning curve caused by choosing perhaps the wrong instrument through ignorance.

If I stick with the Deering for a while will it then be difficult to switch to a scooped instrument with a slightly wider neck?

Or should I ditch the Deering (can't realistically go out and buy the perfect instrument right now) and look for a more 'clawhammer banjo'?

Thanks for any advice.

Adri
