BHO has helped a lot in my process of learning clawhammer and other ot-styles of banjo picking. This is a great place filled with helpful people! So first, thank you all!
Lately I have encountered a problem I haven't seen discussed here before. I dont know if this is a common problem or not.
I am playing clawhammer most of the time with short nail because I cannot grow a long one. This means I hit the string with the nail and then let the callous on my finger tip touch the string. I like the tone which this technique produces. I have also tried many of the clawhammer picks there are around but like the self-made modified version of John Balch's ping pong ball pick the best.
My problem is, I cannot get as much volume as I would like without pick. But when using pick I get this annoying harsh sound when doing the cluck sound although I am using index for picking and ring for the cluck.
I dont know if this is caused by the angle of attack or what. Has anyone had similar problem? What could I do?
