I've used acrylic nails for years for guitar, and took up clawhammer banjo a few months ago, using the same brand I already wear for guitar. My real nails just chip and wear too fast to use, and they're rather slow growing as well. This became a problem about twelve years ago when I had to start taking a fistfull of heart meds every day. Well, either my supplier has changed the acrylic formula, or clawhammer is putting more stress on the nails, because the nail I pick with, my "social" finger nail, has been splitting right up the middle after only a few days of wear. Do any of you folks who use acrylic nails know of a brand or supplier that offers thicker or more flexible nails? At present, I'm wearing a double layer on my middle finger, and that works fine on banjo. When I play guitar, however, the double nail starts to de-laminate at the tip after a bit. This makes a clean tone impossible. I'd really like to find some acrylics that will flex a bit, rather than cracking.
