I'm trying not to use my banjo as a trampoline. I'm coming to clawhammer from guitar and bluegrass banjo and have had a few (in person) and have been following Woodchuck's Rocket Science Banjo (thanks Woodchuck). I've got the bumditty down pat... as long as I stick to the first string. Trying to get a tone out of the second string that sounds anywhere close to desirable is a huge exercise in futility at this point. I'll admit I'm a stickler for tone and don't like a lot of clawhammer playing I hear because I don't like the tone. But at this point I'm finding it hard to believe I'll ever get "there".
Is this a common issue for beginners?
