I've had my banjo for 6 months now, and just started to try a different tuning than the standard G.
Tuning takes a few minutes, it's not all that hard but it is sufficiently a PIA enough that I want to tune it and leave it there for days while I practice in that tuning (hence why I haven't moved from G until now).
I'm wondering when/if some kind of electronic automatic tuning capability might be available or if it was ever tried. I'm thinking of a headstock with SNARK-like tech built in, a microchip controller, maybe something that can vibrate a string, and electric motors to turn the tuning gears (they would need some extra gearing to give small motors the torq needed). The player would select the tuning they want and it would do the rest. The electric motors would draw some current so it might need to be plugged in to work but would still be convenient. Curious if this has been tried in some way, shape or form, searches came up nothing. I would definitely practice in more tunings in a given day if it was easier. Wacky idea?
