Playing chords while singing

This is a pretty basic banjo question, but I'm learning to how learn (yeah, it's a process) banjo by ear and after successfully learning a few instrumental tunes I started trying to learn "sail away" performed by Laura Boosinger. The thing is, I can't really tell what she is doing while she sings. She seems to be playing over chords in a rythmic and simple way. This song is in open g. I usually play in double c or d tuning and I am not too used to chords. Can someone explain to me how to replicate what she is doing? The basic structure of the song seems to be melody, rhythm/vocal, melody, repeat etc.
