Multiple Tunings and beginners

I'm a beginner of just more than a year.  I select tunes I want to learn based on how much I like a tune.  My theory is that if I like it, I will be more motivated to practice and learn, plus, why learn a tune I don't like.  The flaw in this theory is that some songs I like are way over my head for now. In these cases I move on and will get back to them months, years, or decades from now when my skill level allows.

It seems that every tune I fancy inevitably is in a different tuning.  Now to my question.  Am I doing my learning a disservice by changing tunings so frequently as a beginner?

My concerns are this:  I will never 'learn' the fretboard.  Intuitive noting is lost.  I'm not a real musician if I don't know the notes I'm playing (I was told this last weekend).

Fret less banjos were the beginning, so I don't concern myself too much with these notions, but if I focus on learning open G tunes will it pay dividends in the long run, or am I just taking a different route that will get me to the same place in ten years?  And yes, I may be overthinking this. angry
