That was a quote by R.D. Lunceford in another post regarding contest tunes. I hear that phrase a lot, but have a question.
At what point does a "fresh take" break from "tradition"?
Can someone offer me some examples of what they would consider a fresh take on a common tune, while still maintaining tradition?
I struggle with this concept, but maybe someone can explain it in layman's terms.
Lastly, although just about all of my repertoire would be considered old-time, I would not be surprised to hear folks say I'm not always staying true to tradition in my performances. But I'm okay with that, because my main goal is having fun while playing.
thx!
