I started learning clawhammer about 7 months. I have been practicing with bum-ditty, plus whatever felt natural close to bum-ditty. And I can get a tune going, in a simple way, and it can sound pretty good and clean, even with a fast tempo. I did OK without using much instructional material. However, seems like all the songs pretty much sound the same.
I have played 3-finger Scuggs style for about 35 years. With Scruggs style, I feel I know the fingerboard pretty well, and I'm comfortable with it.
I've been working on learning drop thumb for a short time. To me, this now gets difficult. The right hand does not come easy. Also, the comfort level with the fingerboard with Scruggs style does not seem to lend itself to the process of double thumbing clawhammer banjo. The left hand just doesn't want to co-ordinate with the right hand, if that makes any sense.
I would appreciate some help with this. Maybe someone has figured a way to bridge the gap with 3-finger picking and clawhammer, to some extent. I also know instructional material has vastly improved, over the time that I first started playing banjo.
I'm reaching out for advice, and experience, on any practice technique, or instructional material for good solid clawhammer banjo, which will cover basic clawhammer and double thumb technique.
Many Thanks.
Leslie
