New to the banjo

I have noodled in the guitar for many years and took up the uke a few years back. They are both fun instruments to play but I have felt I am was suppose to be a banjo player
I love the sound of clawhammer and thumb lead especially in the mountain minor tuning. I have watched many tutorials on claw hammer and I am starting to get somewhere. I have been learning Little Sadie from the youtubes. A nice lady posted this video tutorial https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCHp5TTbUuTBFIkigcrvODRw

A couple of questions:
When I strike the first string and pluck I tend to hit the head and make a thud. Is this permissible? I wasn't sure if it was stylistic or just plain wrong. The other is, when I am strike strike plucking my thumb hits the 5th string after the first strike and when I pull of the string makes a bit of a sound from sticking to my thumb. Is this something normal or should I try somehow to keep it completely quite. It isn't as loud as my pluck but can be heard. Lastly checking to see if there are any teachers in north western Wisconsin. I have been recommended a couple from the Homestead Picking Parlor in Minneaota but that is a little far. Thanks much.

Nick
