I see that this subject is mentioned in the archives, but I want to relate my experience with it.. Today I was giving a lesson and demonstrated how different the 5th string can sound by putting a small square of tape on it right in Front of the bridge.. Then, just for fun, I tuned the 5th down to a D (we were playing in the key of D)...I couldn't believe how amazing the produced sound was..I don't know if I can ever go back.. I've also tuned the 5th to random notes and have gotten good results...but going to a D was the best.
The next time I'm playing in G I think I'll look for an alternate 5th string tuning for that key..
