Finger Pick on Index Finger?

As my handle reveals, I'm a rank amateur:  UPS delivered my Romero just last week.  

On the wknd I met a OT banjo player who played with a metal banjo pick, turned upside down, on his index finger.  His volume and tone were excellent!

Anyone here play with a finger pick?  Would you recommend a newby avoid a finger pick?  Or would a finger pick be a good idea when just starting out?
