I'm returning to learning clawhammer after a few years of inactivity. I'm using Bob Carlin's dvd and I have a question on right hand thumb position. On the dvd, he has his thumb in a cocked or bent position, and it looks as though he is striking the 5th string with his thumb nail. My thumb seems to want to lay in a straight position, with the fleshy part of the thumb tip striking the 5th string. Is one position preferable to the other? I'm early enough along in learning that I can switch to a cocked position. What do you all suggest, and thanks for any input.
