Banjo compromise

Hello all

I hope to buy a 2nd banjo. This is an Andy Banjo rescue banjo with an 1890s Temlett Mozart pot fitted with a new neck. I have been exchanging emails with Andybanjo concerning what type of bridge and tailpiece would be suitable for my needs and therein lies the problem.

I have come to this point via the ukullele which led me to discover old time music and the banjo. I've been exploring the banjo for 6 months or so and while I have the basic clawhammer technique down, my nails can't hack it so I'm looking to seeger style and 2 finger style.

While playing old time music is what I like, the main public outlet for my talents if any will be the church band that I play in. This requires me to play in many different keys and style without the time or opportunity of re-tuning and/or capo-ing. We often change keys in a song. Because of this I'm also learning classic style banjo which, to my mind at least, is not reliant on different tunings.

My dilemma is this. Do I ask for my new banjo to be set up in the classic style or clawhammer style? One thing I should say at this point is that whichever way I go the banjo will be strung with nylon or nylgut strings. Is a compromise set-up possible?

Your thoughts, suggestions and opinions would be welcome.

Regards

Eric
