Drop Thumb .. Is it just me?

The single most difficult thing I've tried to learn yet on banjo has been "drop thumb".   I've reached a point over the last two years of getting started with the open back banjo where i can actually play with some confidence at least a variation of most of the songs i try to learn.  I'm happy with that.  However, when I go back to some of the songs and players who inspired me in the first place to work on these particular songs, something is missing.

Its not that i was unaware of just "What" was missing but now it seems almost imperative to me to make the final effort to actually put it into play.

I can do it somewhat, but at a slower pace than is required and I can't seem to move past the awkwardness of it which is inevitably filled here and there with mistakes in striking my notes cleanly.

So my question is this ... Is it just me?  Is this ever going to change?  I'm putting a lot into it every morning for maybe an hour at least maybe two  intermixed with trying to keep up my regular Clawhammer and Finger styles up which I'm fairly happy with now.

Any suggestions?  Any runs i should be working on?  Thanks in advance for any help.  (i will tackle tab next but I'd like to get this down first).

Danny
