I've been tryin to find a fretless banjo and have been doing some research and talking with various players/luthiers. The more I learn, the less I seem to know. I play clawhammer, taking lessons, no pro. I love to play with others and my teacher encourages and organizes jam sessions. Most of the songs I play are tuned in G, A, and DblD.
I have been seeking a short scale fretless because of the abilit to tune up. However, some people are telling me that regular scale banjos can be tuned up to "a and DD" directly ( others tell me I'll brake strings ). I've also heard from some fretless players that they use a capo successfully. Some others have explained they just move the bridge up on a regular scale banjo when they want to tune up.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to play either personally.
Long neck fretless instruments seem to be easier to find.
I'm most interested to hear from other fretless players, especially those that play a lot of fiddle tunes.
Thanks in advance. -Stephen
