The village of McClurg is in the Missouri Ozarks, about 40 miles east (and 75 years) from Branson. Every monday the old store becomes a gathering place, not only for musicians, but for the community in general. A pot-luck supper, card games, and just visiting are as important as the music.
And the level of musicianship is quite high. H.K. Silvey and David Scrivener are as good as any fiddler you will find, and guitarist Alvie Dooms is a living legend.
Generations mingle, strangers are not strangers by the end of the evening. Griel Marcus called this, "The Old Weird America". Wrong! To me, this is something priceless that has been lost in most so-called communities.
My wife says, "one of these times, we're just going to bring the furniture and not leave."
