I'm transferring my clawhammer banjo skills to guitar using Steve Baughman's "clawhammer guitar" method. I could never deal with a plectrum so this is my chance to finally take a shot at guitar. I went to Guitar Center and was waiting for them to get my Yamaha and noticed their wall full of ukuleles. I never picked one up before and had some time to kill. I discovered they are strung similar to banjos with the two outer strings higher than the inner strings. I don't know any chords or the proper way to play which I believe is a guitar strum movement. I just figured out some good notes and started clawhammering on it like a banjo and couldn't believe how good it actually sounded! Everything transfers naturally to it from the basic bum ditty patterns to hammer-ons and drop thumb. Needless to say, I made an impulse buy of a Cordoba and within an hour or two of practice had a nice tune going. Its like you learn clawhammer banjo and get a whole other instrument for free.
