I started playing banjo last year and have mostly been doing clawhammer frailing stuff, but i've been getting really interested in folks like Hedy West, Ola Belle Reed and some of the other folks that do some of the up picking stuff, ive gotten the motion down and it comes pretty natural, but i did have a question about what is actually best for hitting the strings. i like playing with bare nails and no picks, with both my index and middle finger, but when up picking is it best to be hitting the string with the skin of the finger or pick it with the nail? the nail seems to be a little more clumsy (but that could just be lack of practice) and if its the skin, is there an approach that anyone recommends that i wouldn't have to sacrifice my nail for frailing?
Thanks, any help is appreciated
