The question of playing clawhammer on a resonator banjo has come up repeatedly on BHO. Obviously, this is a question of tone and volume rather than possibility, for the instruments are similar, except for the closed back. There has also been discussion of the actual difference in tone & volume created by the resonator. I found on the Deering webpage a video that compares a Goodtime 2 and a Goodtime Classic--openback v. resonator. The actual comparison starts around the 3 minute mark, and is nicely done. To my ear the openback has a softer, less sharp sound. But since tone, especially desirable tone, is quite idiosyncratic, especially among OT pickers, this video may help folks wondering which type of banjo they want.
The video applies strictly only to this basic Deering banjo type. It doesn't show that say, a Deering banjo with a white lady tone ring might not sound very different with and without a resonator. Moreover, if the ressonator banjo were a"starter" lightweight banjo compared to an open back with a white lady, tubaphone, or mastertone type tone ring, the results of the comparison could be very different, even opposite, but that's mixing apples and oranges. So have a look and listen, if interested.
