Backing up a better banjo player with chords

I've been playing banjo for a long time but to be honest, I'm average at best. I can sit down with Tab and learn a song in a week and play the melody on a number of fiddle tunes ok.  I'm now playing with a better player who really likes to take the melodic lead on songs and I would like to back him up with chords, riffs and chromatic runs. I used to do that stuff 40 years ago when I played Scruggs style, but I'm a clawhammer guy now and want to learn to play "supporting" roles and back ups clawhammer style. Any thoughts on a good way to get started and build some skills. I need some help.  Thanks,  Steve
