I just noticed an archived thread with a good Q about high string tuning. The thread is closed and I cannot post there, so here goes. Sorry for the delay. Every time I visit BH I wonder why I am not here more often. Great place to be.
I use High Five tuning for much of my clawhammer guitar stuff, so called because I remove the LOW A string and replace it with something HIGH (usually a high E string, any guage is fine.) This creates an amazing richness, a "greater than the sum of its parts" effect.
How to tune the guitar for High Five?
Perhaps the easiest way to get started is to go DdDF#AD. That is a Reuben's Train sound on guitar, and if you want to get adventurous, tune the High Five up to f# for an authentic Reuben's Train tuning with a gorgeous 6th string D bass.
Here it is in action. In the first little bit you get to see the High Five in a non-clawhammer usage.

I also love tuning to Open C and having my High Five as either a D or replace 5 with a 12-string high G string. A VERY cool sound.
High Five gives others the illusion that you are better than you are better than you are :-)
Hey, I'll take it.
I sure would be interested to know if anyone else has other High Five experiences, ideas or tunings to share.
