Hammer on and pull offs for Am in G-tuning

Hi all,

I've been playing the banjo for the better part of a year with minimal guitar background from years ago. I've come across banjohangout and finally decided to make an account.

When playing in G-tuning I normally play a C chord with my first, middle, and index finger. Then, to play an Am I bar the third and fourth strings with my middle finger. I found it makes a very quick switch from C and Am. Many songs I've been trying to play have a HO or PO at the second fret, third string. I can sometimes make a weak PO or HO that sounds interesting by bar-ing or lifting my finger off of the third string. Does anyone else do this? Is it possible to make a clean PO or HO this way?

I've been trying an alternate fingering of the Am chord by using 4 fingers instead of 3 but then switching to other chords has been tricking, I need more practice. Switching from the 4 finger Am to the C will have me playing the C chord with my first, ring, and pinky fingers. And if I want a decent HO or PO at the 2nd fret, 3rd string I should be using all 4 fingers. Is this the best strategy?

I guess I should try to get good both ways. Any suggestions will be great!

Thank you
