Struggling with Darling Corey

I recently ran into some Youtube vids of Darling Corey, specifically by Clifton Hicks, Cedrick Watson, and Sarah Nichols, and really liked them. I like the driving rhythm of the tune the way they play it.

I decided to learn it.

I have now downloaded half a dozen versions of tab and notation and ABC files in various keys and tunings. They are all different. Different keys. Different tab sequences. Different tunings. None of them are making any sense to me. When I try to pore through them I can't even find the melody anywhere.

I have the Seeger book, so I took a look at his B. F. Shelton version. I watched some vids of it and I don't like it at all.

So I have gone back to basics to see if I can figure this out. Here is the basic melody of the tune transcribed to C.

Darling Corey in C

I thought that maybe I could start from here and puzzle out what notes to wrap around this to turn it into the sound that I heard on the versions I cited above. No luck.

I really prefer to start from the basics and figure out how to pull out the extras rather than slavishly memorize tab. Ick. Drudgery.

Anybody have any ideas on what is being wrapped around this melody to add the driving rhythm of it? I really want to understand what is going on here.

I am currently tuned to Double C, but I can change that if it is absolutely necessary.

Thanks
