Up picking / with some downstroke notes..

Been playing a lot of up-picking style lately. Not two finger, but the up picking frailing style.. the style Holcomb plays on his famous Little Birdie recording. I find it very rhythmic and fun to play for dancers, .

I'm wondering for those of you who can play this style, do you play every melody note on the up stroke? Some are hammer-ons and pull-offs. But I find that in some tunes, if I hit a note on the way down, it keeps the flow going and keeps the fifth string going without any break. Otherwise, if every melody note is up pick only, the thumb doesn't get to sound the fifth in between.

Make sense? So downstroke notes too? Or not
