I recently cut my fingernails really short on my fretting hand and pulled a cuticle. While it hurt a bit it developed into something nasty. At first it looked like a blister on the side of my middle finger.  And, my finger was throbbing.  My arm started to ache around the inside of my elbow. The pain grew more intense and  I wound up in the ER last night with a red streak running up my arm, blood poisoning. Any how, I am on the mend with some antibiotics.  I had cut my fingernails really short on my fretting hand and I pulled a cuticle and got a paronychia, and than a lymphangitis. I pulled the information below from some websites if anyone wants to know what I am talking about.  I am totally better but I thought I would tell you folks what could happen if you cut your nails too short.
A cuticle infection, also known as a paronychia, is a nail condition that may be gradual or chronic. Regardless of the severity of the diagnosis, prompt and aggressive treatment is necessary to prevent a cuticle infection from advancing into a severe medical condition.
Inflammation of a lymphatic vessel or vessels. Acute lymphangitis may result from spread of bacterial infection (most commonly beta haemolytic streptococci) into the lymphatics, manifested by painful subcutaneous red streaks along the course of the vessels.
Anyhow, I had an IV of antibiotics, 4 bottles of blood to determine what the infection is, 2 that were taken near the red streak and two from a different site and a tetanus shot.
