Left hang finger pain from pulls offs

Advice needed:

I used to feel all sorts of strange pains in my right / frailing hand and fingers and thankfully once I learned how lightly one needs to actually hit the strings that is no longer a problem.

But now I often feel pain in my left fingers specifically from repetitive forceful pull offs.  I am not sure if the pain is in the skin of my fingers (which would actually be fine) or in the joins of my fingers (which would be real bad in the long-term.)

Overall I suspect that when I do pull offs using my middle finger I may be putting stress on my joints from a side angle and not from the direction for which they are meant to bend.

So, in short:  Anyone have words of wisdom regarding techniques to limit pain on fingers caused by repetitive pull offs?   Is it just a matter of positioning my fingers so they are at a sharp 90 degree angle to the strings?  Or are there other issues at hand?

Or is this a problem unique to me?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
