I have two clawhammer books- Ken Perlman's "Clawhammer Style Banjo" and Dan Levenson's "Old Time Festival Tunes." In Ken's book, the chord part is is the song, whereas in Dan's book, most of the songs are note based without the chord brush strokes. I have listened to You Tube videos and it seems most players are playing a combination of thumb and brush strokes along with single notes.
So, are you just supposed to use a book like Dan's as a starting point for the melody and then add your one brush strokes to it? (Dan really put a lot of work into his book, its impressive. There are 250 pages of songs with two versions of each and a melody line written in standard notation along with two cds).
