I really don't care for nylon strings, which I have on my old ( ca 1900 - 1920) Lyon&Healey "Professional" banjo. But I'm wondering it it's safe to put steel strings on it? I love the banjo, and I had to have the neck flattened when I first got it, so I'm a little gun-shy. The banjo has no truss rod, so I guess it's just the strength of the wood in the neck that withstands the force of the strings. What's your opinion, should I chance it and use steel strings?
