I'm trying the ASPO and hammers as alternatives to drop thumbing, or maybe even replacing drop thumbing. Do these things get more extemporaneous with practice? I guess what I mean is will I ever get to the point where I can just intuitively throw them in? As I play, I don't want to have to pre-think it -- "OK, here's where I do the old 2nd string ASPO". That sort of thing. I never got to that point with drop thumb, I always had to learn a piece with the thumb drops (?) in it, and then hope my thumb would remember to drop at the appropriate time, or more likely pray it would not drop at an inappropriate time.
Anyway, I'd like to put more improvisation into my tunes ( I guess that's the right word ). I once had a guitar instructor who could just throw stuff into his playing at the drop of a hat, and it always amazed me that he could do that.
