I went to an OT jam at a music store today. There were about 15 fiddlers, a couple guitars, and me - the only banjo! It was led by a very talented young fiddle player. Since many of the people were intermediate at best, the tunes were mostly played slowly. At first, I felt kind of frustrated by the tempo, but then I noticed my timing was poor and my notes were sloppy. Playing slowly let me really focus on timing and technique. The tempo was also conducive to learning new tunes. It was a really useful experience!
