Any advice for helping a slow student?

I've been teaching an elderly lady to play clawhammer. She's very committed and passionate about wanting to play, but her progress after several lessons is barely there.

She's a rank beginner, so the first few lessons have been all about striking the strings, bringing the thumb onto the fifth and understanding the rhythm.

The problem is that she forgets what I've just shown her almost straight away and seems to have no grasp of basic movements. She's had some nerve damage in the past and is struggling with this. If she plays along with me, she can play a steady bump-ditty. But the moment I stop, her playing falters or the rhythm changes.

One of my good friends on the Hangout has also tried teaching her, but she can't seem to progress.

I really want to help her play. I also want to see her get some benefit from the money she's paying me.

Anyone else encountered a similar student?
