How much sound difference in a heavier guage string?

Hi all,

I have been reading with interest the threads about banjo strings, and as mine are needing a change, i thought i'd try a different guage.

I would like a warmer sound with more bass. I was wondering though how much difference i will notice in say a change from the set i have now (.10 .12 .14 .22. .10) to maybe a couple of guages higher, the phosphor wound string being .26?

Would i notice a definite sound change? Do you always change the whole set or are individual strings the way to go? Does "heavier" always mean "warmer"?

Thanks for any advice, it's hard to know about these things when you can't hear each guage played before you buy.
