Hello all-
I have been playing banjo for about 5 months. Mostly clawhammer and more recently some two-finger. I have a Prust tackhead that I've kept tuned down to standard D with Nylgut minstrels. Recently I tuned up to E and it's like a whole nother instrument. Really resonates, and the extra tension makes clawhammer a bit easier. I have tried the Nylgut classical set (G) on this banjo and was not happy with the sound, so I think I'm sticking with E.
So my question is, does tuning to E standard, E sawmill, open A, etc. lead to problems in playing with a fiddler? My thought was that they could just stay in AEAE and be ok...however it would seem that this would shift some tunes up or down a string (or to put it another way the fiddler would need to play "G" tunes as if they were "C" tunes, and vice versa). does anyone have experience with this?
