Clawhammer Lorena

For as popular the song "Lorena" used to be in the 60's (1860's that is) it seems like I don't hear very many banjo versions and most of them are bluegrass.   I searched the audio and video archives here on the hangout and didn't really find a clawhammer version.  I looked at the tabs and there is a nice bluegrass version and also a clawhammer version that seems to be mostly a melody played on the first string and up the neck - great for an instrumental, maybe not so good if you want to sing along.  Last night I noodled around with the tune in Open G and then Double C and found that I can play the basic melody in Double C, on the first three strings and first four frets and in a range that matches my voice.  But I'm not really good at "prettifying" a tune so I'd like to see or hear other's ideas for "Lorena" to see what I can do with the basic melody to make it nice.  Tabs, audio, or video would be great.  Also I'm open to other tunings for it, minstrel or clawhammer style, fretted or fretless, whatever.

Looking for people to watch play or learn from locally.

relative sound using frailing pick

I notice the sound of the strings that are plucked with the frailing pick are much louder than those plucked with my thumb. I don't really mind the difference in levels but wonder how it sounds to others. Any comments?

If it's true I can see why since most 'effect' seems to be created by hammer-ons and pull-offs.

Why So Much Variation in Tunes?

Maybe it's just me, but coming from an Irish Tenor position, there is a lot of room for variation in OT tunes. Since many tunes come from a Scots/Irish heritage it's a little surprising but very refreshing. For example, I've heard at least five different variations on West Virginia Gals.

G Tunes

I feel like my reportory is a bit light on G tunes, partly i think because they don't seem to get played as much in these parts as D and A tunes. I can generally fake my way through unfamiliar ones when they come up but thought folks here might be able to recommend some to work on. these are the ones i know:

Barlow Knife
Big Scioto
Boatman (a G tune around here)
Darlin Nellie Gray
Did you Ever See the Devil Uncle Joe
Nail That Catfish to a tree
Oh Susanna
Redwing
Reuben
Seneca Square Dance
Shove That Pigsfoot
Turkey in the Straw
Waterbound

So what are some other G tunes commonly played at pickin parties or jams in your region? i've been meanin to do some listening to Leather Britches, though i haven't actually heard it played in person anywhere. i'm talking more about fiddle tunes or tunes with words here rather than songs.

John Burke's Old Time Fiddle Tunes for Banjo

I was poking around through the archives and found a post asking about this book. With OT banjo as popular as it is, I though some folks might be interested. Burke's book is currently out of print. Old copies of it can be found on amazon or ebay, but at quite a hefty price. A pdf of the book and an mp3 of side one of the record that came with it (and other resources) can be found, free of charge, here:

Maybe It's time I understand a little music theory

Hi All, I was just reading this thread in playing advise Bluegrass (Scruggs) Style. Cord positions on the fretboard, http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/235060  an thought I'd bring it to the clawhammer style. when you all start talking about music theory you lose me at the get go, to be more honest I know nothing about music, maybe time  I should try to change that but where do you start. I saw mention of circle of 5ths and Nashville number system but I don't think you could understand it just buying the chart. So where do I go,. I don't want a degree in theory just a little understanding. Now I'm not some young kid that absorbs thing like a sponge, and I've killed off a lot of brain cells before coming to my senses so I need to keep it simple. Thanks Larry

Your Rocky Spine by Great Lake Swimmers

Hi everyone,

I saw a couple of old posts requesting tab for Your Rocky Spine by the Great Lake Swimmers, so I wrote some up as best I could using Guitar Pro 5. I didn't get around to tabbing out the entire song, or all the different runs Erik Arnesen plays, but it gives the meat of the song, and should be enough to perform it and create your own runs to go along with it.

You can find it in the tab archive here: http://direct.hangoutstorage.com/banjohangout.org/storage/tabs/y/tab-your-rocky-spin-17215-433816152012.pdf

The two forum posts that requested this tab are:

HI. I've looked on the internet  but I can't find a banjo tab for that great old song Hobo's Lullaby. I love listening to both versions by Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie and hope as a newbie I can learn to play this tune. Any help out there?

folk songs and clawhammer

I've mentioned in past posts that I've been taking voice lessons - for about 1 1/2 years. I am starting to feel better about the sounds coming out of my mouth and incorporating clawhammer bum ditty with my singing. But here's what I'm dying to do and need some advice about the simplest way to do it. I have some songs I would give up my dog to learn to play on the banjo. Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne' is one http://singalongwith.us/songs/Leonard_Cohen_-_Suzanne.html

This is another one http://singalongwith.us/songs/John_Denver_-_Rocky_Mountain_High.html

What suggestions do you have in terms of playing these with simple bum ditty (and hammer-ons and pull-off's and slides)? Do I need to find some melody notes and incorporate them?

Just kidding about giving up my dog.. Never happen.

Nobody's Fault But Mine Clawhammer Style

Hi,

I seem to be having trouble finding tabs for this song, "Nobody's Fault But Mine," for Clawhammer. I'm a beginner so, I don't have what it takes yet to figure it out. Anyone have a tab, and key to play in, and advice on how to play this? Looks like Abigail throws a little Round Peak in her playing as well, which I've been practicing too.

Here is a video the song by Abigail Washburn that got me started on this. (pretty awesome video) Thank you in advance.

Where do I hammer on the string? I get aspos; I'm working on speed but I have the mechanics down. Where do I hit the string for the hammer-on, though? And then snap it up again for an open frailed note on that string? Why am I having trouble with this?

Doesn't that sound wonderfully euphemistic? But seriously, how high do you hold your banjo? Mine seems to want to interfere with my anatomy in an awkward way.

Boggs style?

I was just picking Pretty Polly with the thumb-bass, two-finger up-pluck and the thumb-hammer-middle-index-thumb-pluck roll like Dock Boggs,  and it occurred to me that people don't play that style much...

Anyone have any ideas on why?  It's a very cool style and not incredibly difficult, especially compared to Bluegrass and Roundpeak dropthumb...It seems like, with how popular he is, that there would be more followers of his way...

How do you hold the neck?

What part of the left hand rests on the neck when you play? I'm finding that I struggle to get clean fingering (I can often *just* feel the vibration of a neighboring string) with the neck resting anywhere but way out on the thumb pad (neck at a steep angle, top of my ear at about the third fret). My hand gets tired pushing the neck up like that as it wants to slip back down to the web.

What type of banjo for clawhammer?

After learning Scruggs style for 3 years, I have developed a mild form of dystonia in my index finger. I've started to relearn with my middle and ring fingers, but I'm afraid of developing the same issue with my index finger on down the road. So. . . I've decided to keep at it by switching over to clawhammer. I figure, this way, my confounded fingers can just curl all they want! I'm actually a big fan of history, and clawhammer certainly seems to have more historic roots than Sruggs style (no offense, Earl!)

In any case, the banjo I have is a super nice 5 sting resonator with an old wood tone ring. I guess it's technically intended for 3 finger Scruggs bluegrass, but I'm just wondering how useful it will be playing clawhammer. . . I've started to learn the bum-ditty, without any issues. Should I eventually plan to get another banjo to play clawhammer???
