Howdy over here on the clawhammer side of the hangout! I've spent all my time focused on three finger Scruggs style but lately am feeling a powerful draw to the old timey clawhammer sound. I'm guessing that a newbie's first openback won't likely be their last but I need to start somewhere. I've got a few decent bluegrass banjos and have been starting to figure out the basic 'bum diddy' on one or the other of those but I want to get a decent openback. This is a whole new world for me and I sure would look forward to some input. I keep ending up searching out Bart Reiter and Mike Ramsay banjos. The Reiter Round Peak has my attention but I don't know doodly about this style of banjo so if you that are in the know could advise me? What are the pros/cons to a 12" verses 11" rim. At this point I think I'd like a bit of a darker, mellower sound over a thin bright sound. Is there a particular rim/ring combo that would allow for a wider range of setup possibilities if my taste in tone changes? Thanks in advance for your help:)
